Future ARD research and management experience will bring further advances in the state-of-the-art. Ultimately the goal should be to implement characterization, prediction, and prevention programs at all mines so that material levels of ARD are not produced. Sulfide oxidation may not be completely stopped; however, its effects could be reduced to insignificant levels. Many mines may be capable of achieving zero discharge of effluents through the application of water minimization technologies. INAP, as an organization, has a strong focus on developing clear research initiatives and sourcing funding for projects designed to further the science of ARD. Acceptance that the incorporation of sustainability principles into ARD management planning can produce significant cost savings in the long run for a mine operator is a significant goal for INAP, given that it motivates the mining company to properly manage ARD issues now.
